Cobalt, element symbol Co, silver-white ferromagnetic metal, the surface is silver-white and slightly pink, located in the 4th period, group VIII in the periodic table, atomic number 27, atomic weight 58.9332, close-packed hexagonal crystal, common valence is +2 , +3. Cobalt is a lustrous steel gray metal, relatively hard and brittle, ferromagnetic, and its magnetism disappears when heated to 1150°C. The valence of cobalt is +2 and +3.
Health hazard
Cobalt dust can cause "hard metal disease" ("hard metal disease"), which manifests as allergic asthma, dyspnea, dry cough, occasional chemical pneumonia (interstitial pneumonia), and pulmonary edema. Symptoms relieved after disengagement. CoO can also cause asthma.
The main effect of cobalt on the skin is allergic or irritant dermatitis. Erythema and slight itching on exposed skin are common in the hands, wrists, forearms and other places and skin folds. It is more common in summer than in summer. The patients are mostly new workers exposed to cobalt. Among the above skin diseases, a positive skin test can prove Allergic to cobalt.
Inhalation of cobalt acetate dust can cause symptoms of acute chemical gastritis, including nausea, vomiting, severe pain in the upper abdomen, hematemesis and hematochezia afterwards.
Hazard prevention
If the cobalt salt is swallowed by mistake, gastric lavage is required; if the solution splashes into the eyes, rinse with water or saline for at least 15 minutes.
CaNa2-EDTA, CaDTPA, and cysteine can reduce the toxicity of cobalt and can be tried. Dermatitis can be applied locally with acetic acid and urea cream ointment. Patients with chemical pneumonia and pulmonary edema should be treated with glucocorticoids.
Storage and transportation
It should be handled in accordance with the regulations of (GB13690-1992) inflammable and explosive dangerous goods. It should be transported in the morning and evening in summer to prevent sun exposure. During transportation, excessive impact, shock, and transportation with the curing agent are not allowed. The storage process must be dry, ventilated, insulated, without direct sunlight, and the temperature should be below 25°C. It is best to store product packaging barrels in no more than two layers, and cover the barrels tightly.
